History

Another success was when in 1993 a football team made up from our members visited Locri in Italy where they won a Football Tournament. This Tournament, named after Maurizio Migliori, one of the founders of the Centro Coordinamento Inter Clubs, was contested by other three teams and the Malta team managed to win both their games and ended as winners. The trophies won in this tournament are still proudly exhibited in our present committee room.

Unfortunately on the 2nd August 1994, an Extraordinary General meeting was held at St. Publius Hall Floriana and in this meeting four members of the existing committee resigned from their posts. These members were elected to form part of the club committees for the years 1993-94 and 1994-95. During this same meeting another committee was formed to run the club. Five new nominations were made and these were by John Zammit, Lawrence Cutajar, Sammy Attard, Edwin Bugeja and Charles Camilleri. These five members were joined by Antoine Portelli and Nello Rizzo Naudi who did not resign from the previous committee. The first meeting of this new committee was held on the 3rd August 1994 and John Zammit was elected as President and Antoine Portelli as Secretary General. In September of the first year a visit was made by the club’s delegation to Milan headed by John Zammit. During this visit various subjects were discussed and existing problems were duly tackled. Following this meeting, relations with the Centro Coordinamento started to get better again and although from time to time certain problems cropped up, relations could be described as very good until this day. In fact the three main aims of this new committee were:

  1. to better the relations with the Centro Coordinamento,
  2. to better the relations with the club members and
  3. to find a new and bigger premises for our club.

The first aims were reached within a very short period. In order to reach the third aim the committee appointed Joe Schembri as Chairman of the sub-Committee for this project. Works started immediately and in a short timeframe a piece of land was bought in Santa Venera. On the 15th October 1995 a pre-contract was signed before Notary Public Dr. Schembri Adami. On the 10th December 1995 a General Extraordinary meeting was held at the Halland Hotel, St Andrews. During this meeting the members present were given all the information available regarding this project and plans of the proposed new premises were also exhibited. This new project was unanimously approved by those present who also gave the committee the go ahead to obtain a financial loan from a local commercial bank.

Another historical day for our club was that of the 6th June 1996. On this day an official visit was made to our club in Floriana by two Inter players namely Maurizio Ganz and Pier Luigi Orlandini. These two players were accompanied by a number of Inter directors including Antonio Pisino, the person responsible for Inter Clubs outside Italy. Through this visit our club made history as it was the first Inter Club outside Italy that was honoured by an official visit of Inter’s first team players.

During this period construction works on our new premises continued at a very fast pace. On the 14th October 1996 the contract of the new premises was signed at the office of Notary Public Dr. Schembri Adami. The contract was signed by Joe Schembri. Present for this remarkable moment were also club President John Zammit and Treasurer Angelo Schembri.

The 7th October 1997 was also a very important day for our club. On this day the Pay-Per-View system was installed in our club at Floriana. The first direct Inter league match on this system was screened at the club on the 12th October 1997 and those present witnessed Inter beat Piacenza 2-0 at San Siro.

On the 18th May 1997 an 'Open Day' was held at the new premises and the club started to operate officially from this location. After various difficulties and immense work, the INTER CLUB MALTA had the premises it deserved and which reflected the dignity of this club. As it was so well indicated by John Zammit in the NERAZZURRO issue of March-May 1997, now a new era had started.
